Christmas Party Games for Adults: 15 That Actually Work

Christmas party games for adults, sorted by group size and effort: quick icebreakers, drinking-optional games, and a two-hour murder mystery for 6 to 14.

The best Christmas party games for adults fit the time you have. For a 20-minute gap, play white elephant, Christmas charades or a fast quiz. For a whole evening, run a Christmas murder mystery: every guest plays a suspect, questions the others for about two hours, and votes on who did it. Below are 15 games sorted by group size and effort, with what each one needs.

Icebreakers (10 to 15 minutes)

1. Two truths and a lie, Christmas edition. Each person shares three Christmas facts about themselves: the worst gift they got, a family tradition, a holiday disaster. One is false. Good with people who do not know each other yet.

2. Guess the baby photo. Everyone sends a childhood Christmas photo to the host in advance. Put them on the TV one at a time and let the room guess. Works well at the office.

3. Who am I? Stick a famous Christmas character on each guest's back (Buddy the Elf, Scrooge, Hans Gruber). They ask yes-or-no questions until they get it.

4. Christmas song lyric finish. Play the first line of a song and stop. The first person to sing the next line wins a point. Needs a speaker and a playlist, nothing else.

Gift games (20 to 40 minutes)

5. White elephant. Everyone brings one wrapped gift under a set price. Draw numbers; each person opens a gift or steals one already opened. Cap steals at three per gift or it never ends. Scales to 30 or more.

6. Secret Santa reveal. If you ran a Secret Santa, make the reveal a game: each person guesses who drew them before opening.

7. Pass the parcel, adult version. Wrap a prize in many layers, with a dare or a question between each one. Keep the dares mild if colleagues or in-laws are in the room.

Team games (20 to 45 minutes)

8. Christmas charades. Films, songs and carols only. Teams of four or more, one minute per turn.

9. Christmas quiz. Five rounds of five questions: films, music, food, traditions around the world, and a picture round on the TV. The easiest game to scale to a big group.

10. Christmas Pictionary. Same rules as charades, but drawn. A whiteboard or a big pad works better than paper on knees.

11. Ornament relay. Teams race to hang ornaments on a tree, one at a time, using a spoon or chopsticks. Loud, short, and good after dinner.

12. Christmas movie trivia showdown. Pairs face off on quotes from the same five films. Pick films most people have seen.

Drinking games (optional)

13. Christmas movie drinking game. Pick one film and a short list of rules (every time someone says "Christmas", every time it snows). Offer a soft drink version; the game works the same.

14. Mulled wine taste test. Three batches, numbered cups, and everyone votes on the best. Hosts love it because it doubles as the drinks.

The main event (about two hours)

15. A Christmas murder mystery. This is the one that fills the evening. Each guest gets a character with a secret and a reason to want the victim gone. Over three rounds, people question each other, new clues come out, and the room argues over who is lying. At the end everyone votes, and the reveal shows who did it.

It works at a Christmas party because it gives people who do not know each other something to talk about, and it gives the quiet relatives a role. Nobody has to act; reading your lines and asking questions is enough.

What to plan:

  1. Pick a mystery for your group size. Most Christmas murder mysteries take 6 to 14 players.
  2. Send characters a few days ahead, so guests can find a costume (an ugly sweater counts).
  3. Plan food you can eat standing up, or run one round per course at a sit-down dinner.
  4. Keep rounds to 20 to 30 minutes. Three rounds, a vote and the reveal take about two hours.
  5. Run the short games around it, not during it. White elephant or a quiz fits well after the reveal.

With Sleuth Night

Silent Night, Deadly Night is our Christmas murder mystery for 6 to 14 players: a family snowed in at a lodge on Christmas Eve, a will about to be read, and a Santa who never makes it to the tree. Each guest gets a private link on their phone with their character, secret and costume note, the clues show on your TV, and the host plays too. There is a Secret Santa in the story, so a real one between rounds one and two fits right in. Setting up is free; you pay $29 once, when you press Start Round 1. See the Christmas murder mystery party page for how the night runs, or the office Christmas party page for a work team.

For a smaller table, Corked is a dinner-party mystery for 4 to 6, and Dead Stop is a free one-hour mystery for 4 or 5. For a big group, see the murder mystery for 14 players or our guide to murder mystery parties for large groups. Hosting again a week later? A New Year's Eve murder mystery plays the same way.

Questions hosts ask

What are good Christmas party games for adults?

For a short slot: white elephant, Christmas charades, or two truths and a lie with a festive twist. For a whole evening: a Christmas murder mystery, where every guest plays a suspect for about two hours. Pick by how long you have and how many people are coming.

What is a good Christmas game for a big group of adults?

White elephant and a team quiz scale to 30 or more. A murder mystery works best for 6 to 14 in one game; for a bigger group, two people can share a character or you can run two rooms.

What Christmas party games work without drinking?

All of them on this list. The drinking versions are optional add-ons; a murder mystery, a quiz or charades work just as well with mocktails.

How long should Christmas party games last?

Plan one main game and two or three short ones. Short games take 10 to 20 minutes each. A murder mystery takes about two hours, so it becomes the main event rather than a filler.
